Our health, growth, and vitality depend on our cells' ability to make exact copies of our DNA. The process by which cells switch on the correct path is called DNA methylation. This process impacts how our body converts food into energy, our immune response, our brain chemistry, our response to stress, and how our bodies repair and respond to damage caused by free radicals. Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is a chemical used by the cell to make amino acids, energy & reverse the "DNA methylation" clock.
Studies show that blood plasma levels of AKG can drop up to 10-fold as we age. Fasting and exercise, already shown to promote longevity, increase the production of AKG. AKG is not found in a normal diet, making supplementation the only feasible way to restore its levels. A double-blind study was performed on middle-aged mice where AKG was added to their food. The results? Some of the mice did experience moderate lifespan extension (the average was around 12%), and measures of health span increased by more than 40%.
Mitochondrial Dysfunction - As we grow old our mitochondria function less efficiently. As the "power plants" of our cells, mitochondria produce energy so that our cells can remain alive and perform their functions. Damage occurs to our mitochondria such as free radicals, mutations, epigenetic changes. Eventually, these damaged mitochondria accumulate, resulting in cells that function less efficiently, which we call "aged" cells.
